Employee Spotlight:

We are happy to announce that Matt Corey is a new addition to our outside sales team in Daphne.  Matt has over 30 years experience in commercial sales and purchasing. He has really started off with a bang since joining the Swift team. Matt has brought a loyal customer base, and a fantastic network of subs and superintendents.  Throughout his career he has come to know contractors from the Florida Panhandle to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

(We particularly love that he usually has treats in hand when he comes in the store.)

Matt is married to Carmen, who is a long time employee of Long’s Services in Mobile.  Matt has two daughters Madelyn and Amanda.  Like most native Mobilians, Matt enjoys fishing and he also loves working on his collection of cars.  A close friend of Matt let us know that while he enjoys fishing, he doesn’t always bring ‘em home to cook.

Welcome to the team Matt.

Employee Spotlight:

Scott Andrews-150x165Scott Andrews joined the Swift Supply team at our Brewton store in May of 2013.  He was new to the retail side of the building supply industry.  He quickly developed relationships with our regular contractors and DIY’s who depend on us for their building materials.  He has a real passion for helping customers get what they need to get it right the first time.

Scott graduated from W. S. Neal High School.  He then served 5 years in the Army defending our country with 3 deployments to the Middle East.  He was honorably discharged in 2006.  After returning to the states he worked for 4 years as a production and shipping supervisor for Code Blue.

I guess that will be determined if his family continue to grow.

Employee Spotlight: Deneene Deer

Deneene Deer-200x236-1

In July, Deneene Deer will be celebrating her 14th anniversary with Swift Supply at the home office in Atmore.  She is responsible for Accounts Payable processing for the entire corporation and her current challenge is seeing the company go “paperless.”

Deneene is a life-long resident of Bay Minette.  She is the proud mom of one son, Dakota Parker, who is a recent graduate of the University of South Alabama with a degree in Criminal Justice.  Deneene passed her strong work ethic on to Dakota as he worked his way through high school and college and is currently employed with the Gulf Shores Police Department.  He is also a Second Lieutenant in the Alabama National Guard.

Deneene’s roommate is her rambunctious dog, Harley.  Deneene always has a comical story to share of Harley’s adventures (or rather misadventures).

Knowledge of materials in the building industry come easily to Deneene as she has initiated several “do it yourself” projects at her home.  Her hobbies include furniture refinishing, flower arranging, gardening (we enjoy her fruits and vegetables), traveling and live music.

Thomas Rhoades was born and raised on a farm in Atmore where he developed the strong work ethic we all know today.  Thomas graduated from Escambia County High School in 1990 and joined Swift Lumber shortly after.  Thomas moved on to serve as the service manager at Nations Rent (now known as Sunbelt) before returning to Swift Lumber in 2006.  Thomas jumped the Swift family fence and joined Swift Supply 2 years later. He has twin 1 year old grandsons, Adrian and Anthony, and does a good job spoiling them every chance he gets.

Employee Spotlight—Randy Vinson

Randy Vinson is an outside salesman at our Daphne location.

Randy has over 25 years in the building industry. He started at a young age in the construction side of building. The knowledge and experience he has framing and building has been instrumental in making him a valuable asset to both his customers and Swift. Randy is very well respected in our industry and very well known among all of the builders along the Eastern Shore.

Randy is a “good ol’ boy” born and raised in Spanish Fort, AL.  He and his wife Diana have been married for 16 years and have 3 children. Randy is most definitely an outdoorsman who loves to hunt and fish.  You name it and he hunts it….deer, duck, quail, alligator, and hog.  He knows some of the best fishing spots in Baldwin County, only he doesn’t tell where the honey holes are.  A memorable moment for Randy is being a guide for Bill Dance on the Mobile River Delta when Bill was filming his “Bill Dance Outdoors” saltwater fishing show. Anytime we have a cookout around the store Randy can be counted on to do all of the grilling.  He has some awesome recipes for the grill.

June 2013: Curtis Waite

curtis-waite-200x256Employee Spotlight-Curtis Waite

Curtis Waite is the manager of our Daphne yard. His career with Swift Supply started in July of 2009, but he has spent most of his life around the building industry. His father (now retired) was a homebuilder in the Mobile area for over 40 years and Curtis spent every summer working for him after he turned about 13 or 14 years old. Any off time from school was spent learning the business alongside his father and he continued this after graduation until his father retired from full time building. Curtis then went to work for the former Sutherland Lumber Company in Mobile for several years before moving to Ford Lumber Company in a yard foreman role. After a few years in Saraland he was asked to head to Baldwin County to open a new store where he spent almost 10 years managing their Robertsdale location. The opportunity arose in the summer of 2009 to join the Swift Supply family in Daphne and Curtis became the manager of our newest store.

Curtis was born in Mobile and has lived in the North Mobile area all his life. He is married to his high school sweetheart Nancy Waite and they just celebrated their 20th anniversary in February. They have 2 children Kevin (14) and Kayla (11)

Walking into Curtis’s office will immediately tell you what his hobbies and favorite activities are. You will see trophies from hunting and fishing along with plaques from coaching football and baseball in the Saraland Youth association for 20 years. You will also see that Curtis is an Alabama fan, as Tide pictures adorn every wall.  There is also no doubt that Curtis’s family is at the top of the list as they are in many of those pictures that adorn the walls.

clarke-pitts-spotlight-200xEmployee Spotlight-Clarke Pitts

Clarke Pitts is manager of our Orange Beach location. He started working for Swift Supply in Orange Beach doing inventory control and receiving in February 2001. He then moved inside to the sales counter and eventually worked his way up to assistant manager. In June 2007 Clarke was promoted to manager of the Bay Minette store. Once the decision was made to close that facility, Clarke became the company trainer.

The opportunity arose for him to return to Orange Beach in September 2009 as store manager. He has seen business as wide open as ever after Hurricane Ivan, and as slow as ever after the recession and oil spill. Things are certainly improving once again and under Clarke’s guidance, Orange Beach continues to lead in sales and service.

Clarke is originally from Clay County, AL. He attended Auburn University pursuing a degree in journalism, and realized it was a dying field. He did not like the idea of turning his favorite hobby, watching sports, into a full-time career. Clarke decided that he needed to move somewhere, and the beach sounded like a good idea. He is amazed that the choices he made in his life led to him meeting a beautiful young lady in Foley named Holly. She had moved up from central Florida. Holly is a very patient and understanding woman, and they were married on October 17, 2009.

Kelly is responsible for our computer mainframe, all upgrades, and making sure our system is running at all times. She is the person who sees that statements go out on time along with any other reports that is needed by owners and employees. She is our “go to person”. If anything goes wrong, we call Kelly.

August 2012: David Knowles

Manager, Brewton

David Knowles started his employment with Swift Supply in July of 2000 as an outside account manager.
He was located at the Brewton store where he worked directly under Jackie Jackson who was the store manager at the time. David handled contractor sales in and around the Brewton area for over 10 years.
In February of 2012 he was promoted to store manager at the Brewton store.

David came to Swift Supply from a totally unrelated field. He is a graduate of Auburn University where he studied agriculture and received a degree in plant protection. He then went to work in the ag field where he sold various agricultural products ranging from fertilizer for farmers to dog food to the sporting dog owners. He came to Swift Supply not because he knew the building industry but because he knew how to handle customers. It wasn’t long before he was able to learn the new products lines and was able to be successful.

David is a native of the Brewton area living there most of his life. He married his high school sweetheart Liz and they celebrated there 31 anniversary last December. He has two children Rachel 26 who is married and is living in Jacksonville Florida and Robert 20 who is a student working on his engineering degree.

There are a few sayings that he believes will allow almost anyone success.

“When we work we work hard, when we play we play hard, and when we don’t try to hide it.”
“When you tell the truth you don’t have to remember what you said.”
“A man that doesn’t make a mistake every once and a while probably isn’t doing anything.”
“Treat people the way you want to be treated.”
“Pass on the news good or bad.”
And last as one of his previous bosses said, “GO SELL SOMETHING”

July 2012: Helen Skinner

Manager, Monroeville

In her words Helen Skinner was as green as they come when she first started off in the building supply industry in 1992 for Southern Building Products. Who would have thought that a favor for a friend would start a lifelong career? In only a couple of years Helen worked her way up to manager of the Monroeville store. She gives all the credit to the owner of the company for teaching her everything she needed to succeed in this line of work. She learned to ask questions of not only her fellow employees but also the contractors and the sales representatives that came into the store on a weekly basis. She would spend many of her lunch breaks going to jobsites asking questions and learning how the material that she sold was used. Doing all this she was able to gain trust and establish relationships with most of the local contractors around the area. She was able to prove herself in a man’s world.

After leaving Southern Building Products in 1995 she came to Swift Supply in April working under the late Rickey Hughes. After 4 years of gaining more experience she became manager of the Monroeville store. She is very appreciative of the opportunity that the Swift family has given to her and hopes that she has achieved some of the goals that were set for the Monroeville store in her 17 years at Swift Supply.

Helen has been married to Gerald Skinner for 42 years. They have 2 children together, Jerrald (Melanie) Skinner of Excel and Minthea (Randal) Vaughn of Millbrook. She also has 6 grandchildren Cody 11, Lydia 9, Makenna 8, Emily 5, Kadence 4, and Ashton 3. She stay’s involved with her grandchildren’s sports and activities. It brings her back to when she was young and involved with her own children’s activities. She says one of the most important things a parent can do is stay active in the lives of their children.

She is also active in her community and is serving another term on the board of the Chamber of Commerce and is also a Beautification chairperson for Monroeville.

The construction work started calling him again and he signed with the local labor union in Pensacola and began working on a natural gas pipe line that ran from Louisiana to Stuart, Fl. April 2012: Jeff Silvers

Jeff Silvers, Orange Beach - Swift Supply
Sales Manager, Orange Beach Store

Jeff was born in Lynnwood, CA, in 1965. His family moved to the mountains of Idaho when he was a young boy, and he worked on the farm during the summers. His father, William Silvers, was a general contractor, and when the family moved to Tennessee Jeff started working in the construction industry.

In 1981 they moved to the Alabama Gulf Coast. The family’s business was building homes and commercial projects. Jeff worked after school and on the weekends throughout high school, and learned the business from his father. He graduated from Foley High School in 1984 and immediately went to work in construction.

Jeff started working for the Kittrell family in the Fall of 1985 when they purchased Gulf Shores Builders Supply. He was the Operations Manager and learned all aspects of the building supply industry. He worked in the yard, ran the yard, purchased materials, did estimates, and worked in sales. When the owner retired, Jeff became the General Manager for the last 5 years he worked there. Jeff spent 18.5 and years with GSBS.

On March 29, 2004, Jeff came to work at Swift Supply, Orange Beach, as the Sales Manager, and has just celebrated his 8-year anniversary.

Jeff has lived in Orange Beach for 31 years, and is married to Rae Ann. She is a C.P.A. and they are about to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. He also has two sons, Brandon and Chase. Brandon, 17, is graduating this spring from Gulf Shores High School, where he played football and basketball. He will be attending Troy University this summer. Chase, 11, loves sports and the outdoors. He would live at the hunting camp Jeff attends in Range, AL, year-round if his mother would let him.

Jeff has served on numerous City of Orange Beach boards including the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Volunteer Fire Department, Youth Sports Association Commission, and is currently serving on the City Council. Jeff believes in volunteering in the community and giving back to those less fortunate. He has voluntarily coached youth sports in soccer, basketball, football and baseball for the past 12 years. He believes that staying involved and giving back to the community makes it vibrant, strong, and healthy. His favorite past-times consist of cooking for big crowds, watching his kids play sports, spending weekends at the hunting camp, and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.

He plans over the next few years to continue his work at Swift Supply, volunteer and serve Orange Beach, and watch Brandon play quarterback at Troy University.
